This new hardware MCA is compatible with Scintillation detectors that are using Silicon Photo Multipliers (SiPM) in place of PMT’s. More and more SiPM’s are, in some circumstances, starting to replace PMT’s . They are much smaller than the traditional PMT and need no HV. For the moment the resolution of the detectors using SiPM’s are, compared to the traditional PMT, less good but not bad (7 to 8% for a 2” x 2” CsI or NaI ). Because the signal of a SiPM’s is slow the maximum count rate is less than with PMT based scintillators. Brightspec is working together with Scionix to finetune this solution. The preamplifier is build-into the detector housing. The cable between the detector and Topaz-Pico/SIPM include three wires: signal, low voltage (6V) and earth. The SiPM’s do not require HV. A SiPM is also less sensitive to temperature shift compared to the PMT . To compensate for the small temperature shift of the SiPM a special circuit is build-in the preamplifier. For the moment the dimensions of the Topaz-Pico/SIPM are identical to the Topaz-Pico.
